Wireless backhaul networks utilise microwave links to connect a radio access network (RAN) site to the core of the mobile network. Microwave backhaul is particularly critical when fibre is unsuitable which maybe based on geography, density or speed of deployment. Mobile telecommunications infrastructure (XHaul)
XHaul is a collective term that covers fronthaul, midhaul and backhaul representing the various connections between the edge of the network, base stations, remote radio heads and the core fibre network. XHaul is achieved through a combination of fibre and wireless links and traditionally, backhaul has employed licensed microwave bands (between 6GHz and 42GHz). However, as the data demands on networks increases, the capacity of XHaul links has had to keep up, by employing the significant extra bandwidth available within the lightly licensed mmWave bands, primarily E-band (71-76GHz / 81-86GHz).
