Front, Mid and Back Haul solutions for wireless networks

High-performance wireless backhaul links

Wide bandwidth mm Wave radios provide the ideal solution to the increasing capacity demands of next generation communications systems. Fiber like capacity; 10Gbps in a single channel, 40Gbps in multichannel configurations and with sufficient Tx power, mmWave links specifically E-Band can operate at high capacity over 10km. Transceivers

Filtronic specialises in device-agnostic mmWave transceivers, that are high-performance, competitively priced and significantly reduce our clients time to market. All manufactured in-house using our fully automated, precision chip-and-wire manufacturing technology, offering high reliability and low cost. These integrated, ultra-high-capacity transceiver modules, include Morpheus II, Hercules and Orpheus, and deliver carrier-class multi-gigabit connectivity for point to point radio links.

Technology for telecommunications innovation

Front haul, mid haul and backhaul

Fronthaul describes the element of a radio access network closest to the base station and transports data in a centralised network from the radio unit to the distributed unit . Midhaul connects the distributed unit to the centralised unit. Backhaul connects a cell site to the core network in a distributed network.

Non-terrestrial networks

Filtronic’s proven E band technology platform has been developed to enable a rapid, low risk transition from high-performance short-range terrestrial links to the highest capacity long range non-terrestrial links. Filtronic has been a major mmWave technology provider to the non terrestrial & near space ‘HAPS & LEO’ industries for several years.

5G XHaul

XHaul is a term commonly used to describe the connection of  cell sites or cell site functional elements via fronthaul, midhaul, and backhaul networks. XHaul links interconnect cell sites to each other, back to the core network, and ultimately to data centres via several centralised and distributed architectures. It is a key component of the shift to 5G.

E-Band

E-Band has significant capacity benefits: of up to 20 Gbps links in dual channel configuration, making it ideal for a data hungry world. E-Band has taken a low cost, light licensing approach versus high cost traditional microwave band licences, making it ideal for future growth and further deployment.

E-band falls outside (above) the oxygen absorption peak associated with V-band at 60GHz, enabling longer link distances

In the traditional microwave bands there are a number of bands between 6GHz and 42 GHz operating with narrow channel bandwidths.. The total bandwidth available across these licenced microwave bands  is just 15GHz. These bands can be heavily congested and high cost, band specific licences are required to operate in these bands.

In contrast, mmW bands (E-band, W-band,  & D Band) provide approximately 50GHz of bandwidth in wide channels allowing very high data rates to be achieved.

Microwave and mmWave products for telecommunications infrastructure

Morpheus II

Morpheus II E-Band transceiver modules provide a turn-key solution for carrier grade mobile XHaul applications. Each module contains all the transmit and receive functions necessary for the RF section of an E-Band link and provides a simple connection to a high data rate full duplex modem. The integrated diplexer...

Cerus

Filtronic’s range of power amplifiers provide market leading linear mmW power. Available in single to N-way configurations, the Cerus power amplifiers deliver unparalleled performance for long range E-Band communications. Cerus  power amplifiers are available as 32, 8, 4 & 1 way E-Band modules. Containing GaAs MMICs performance matched and...

Orpheus

10Gbps capable, ideal for use in high-speed mobile backhaul networks for services such as LTE-Advanced and 5G. Easy Entry to E-band Market for OEMs Orpheus modules are designed for easy incorporation into ODUs for rapid time to market with minimal customer engineering resource. Low technical risk, with >50,000 Filtronic mmWave...

Small cell filters

With the lower power of small cell products, the main drivers to a successful product are compact size, low weight and both high performance and efficiency. The filter is one of the major components of the small cell and has a significant impact on all of these drivers, so...
