The Filtronic Microelectronic Manufacturing Service is based in the UK and operates a world-class clean room facility.
Multiple production assembly lines enable full Hybrid assembly including; MMIC die attach, miniature precision component mounting, surface mount technology (SMT), wire and ribbon bonding, together with skilled manual assembly and hermetic sealing to Military/IPC standards.
Filtronic has developed proprietary automated test systems, paperless operation and tracking software which enables flexible production with high yield. Our system offers full, real time SPC analysis and web-based reporting. The full manufacturing capability is also available for Contract Manufacture.
The company is certified to ISO 9001:2015 and all work is carried out in line with MIL-STD-883 and IPC-610.
Filtronic microelectronics’ manufacturing facilities are located in NETPark, County Durham, UK and in Suzhou, China.
The Contract Manufacturing Service enables customers to realise their own designs using Filtronics precision hybrid manufacturing facilities, supported by a strong operations and manufacturing engineering team. This enables cost-effective manufacture and sustained cost reduction services for customers requiring complex, high mix products to high reliability and quality levels.
We are able to offer extensive volume experience to customise and adapt products, optimising them for cost-efficient volume manufacture. With our significant investment in hybrid assembly, advanced microwave test systems, military standard processes and full traceability, we offer a unique low risk and secure service.
Applications include 4G radio links, phased array radars and security applications such as imaging.
Filtronic has demonstrated world class product quality and reliability, with over 500,000 transceiver modules and 700,000 filter products successfully deployed in the field. This is achieved through a strong quality culture, six sigma, high levels of production automation and traceability.
To meet increasing demands for integration and cost reduction, Filtronic has developed a range of proprietary MMICs which are packaged in miniature surface mount multichip modules enabling manufacture in mass SMT lines. A major application is for the latest generation of PTP radios in the 4-42GHz band. As these packages minimise interconnects, the highest level of performance is achieved.
Filtronic Process Engineers have significant experience of dispensing different epoxy types, in optimised patterns. They are able to dispense epoxy and place components in deep pockets at multiple levels. Automated camera recognition systems are used for accurate alignment, critical for modules operating at mmWave frequencies.
All equipment programming and product support are provided in-house by Filtronic Process Engineers for the life of each product.
Filtronics team of highly trained and experienced wire bond operators ensure that all work is carried out to the highest standard. Robust & reliable wire bond process capabilities are developed by optimising and tightly controlling the key wire bond process and material parameters. Ball shear and wire pull test are used as tools to qualify and centre the process. Sample ball shear and pull test are then used during manufacture in order to maintain high levels of quality & yield.
Filtronics wire bond equipment is suitable for deep access multi-level operation and uses gold wire to form bonds between components, typical wire sizes are between 17.5 – 33 microns.
In-house programming capability and process engineering support.
Filtronic has a proven track record for developing custom volume test solutions for products ranging from packaged chip to complex RF and mmWave assemblies and systems operating at frequencies between 4GHz to 90GHz.
Filtronic has a range of in-house thermal HASS (Highly Accelerated Stress Screening) chambers which provide rapid temperature cycling of up to 60°C/Min ramp rate for screening out latent defects. A humidity test chamber allows for life testing at an elevated humidity and temperature and forced air Thermostream systems provide hot and cold conditions at test ensuring our products meet the environmental requirements of our customers. Filtronic also has access to off-site shock and vibration equipment.
Filtronic has extensive experience designing bespoke test fixtures ranging from individual desktop designs to large, fully automated pneumatically driven test stations. In-house switching solutions coupled with off the shelf test and measurement equipment from suppliers such as Agilent/Keysight compliment the test fixtures enabling robust scalable test solutions.
Filtronic has developed strong relationships with key test equipment suppliers and has worked on several joint partnership developments with Agilent/Keysight.
By using these Industry standard software environments Filtronic is able to very quickly create reliable test frameworks and scalable test modules for every part of the product lifecycle.
Fully integrated with the software environments, Virinco’s WATS Test Data Management system provides live test data, as well as historical yield and trend analysis. In-house WIP (Work In Process) tracking software allows for every stage of the build and test process to be routed and tracked ensuring maximum efficiency.
With Software Development Team members certified by National Instruments, Filtronic Broadband are able to ensure up to date industry-standard best practices and processes leading to high-quality scalable architecture, code reuse and source control.

Filtronics proprietary web-based WIP Tracking, SPC and Yield Reporting System provides live real time information. Full product traceability is maintained down to each serialised module, essential for defence programmes. Filtronic uses a commercial MRP system to track and control material and finished goods.
The Filtronic Document Control System ensures that all process and product changes are implemented and tracked appropriately. Filtronic’s accredited quality systems and procedures ensure robust project management with Tollgate based NPI system to provide seamless introduction of new products into volume supply, with minimum time to market. Each customer has a dedicated project team providing regular communication and interaction from the concept phase through to volume ramp.
Filtronic has significant experience both designing & manufacturing products for OEMs. Filtronic uses Design for Manufacture techniques to ensure cost effective manufacture is achieved. A number of existing customers products have benefited from small design changes, recommended by Filtronic, to improve manufacturability. These changes have led to significant improvements in throughput and yield.
Our operations team are experienced in operating advanced web based, consignment models and logistics to provide short lead times to minimise working capital. Filtronic has significant leverage and buying power through strong partnerships with key suppliers which support aggressive cost reductions. These suppliers are strategically situated around the globe to support aggressive lead time requirements.
We are able to offer bespoke microwave design services for a broad range of applications up to 110GHz – across a range of market sectors including telecoms, aerospace and defence, security imaging and medical. Our engineering team has skills in the design of integrated modules involving complex electronic control of the components and a deep understanding of the application and architecture for which the designs are intended.
We are unique in having many of our designs manufactured and tested in-house by our state of the art high volume manufacturing facility. This allows concurrent development of tailored test solutions and manufacturing processes to ensure a smooth transfer into production and rapid volume ramp up.
Filtronic designers, while always selecting the right technology for the specific application, also have access to an exclusive range of in-house designed GaN FETs or multifunction microwave and mmWave ICs which give major cost advantages to our bespoke designs.

Our MMIC engineers have designed on a wide range of GaAs foundries, are experienced in the use of their design kits and are constantly fine tuning and optimising our model sets, originally derived from standard foundry models.
Filtronic has an established RF on wafer test facility and has unrivalled experienced in the measurement, characterisation and reliability analyses of mmWave devices and integrated circuits to 110GHz.
